The Edmonton Royals tangled with the Edmonton Mustangs in a battle of two teams who are on the rise in the Capital Junior Hockey League Sunday night at Bill Hunter Arena.

Royals went down 1-0 in the first period when Mustangs forward Alex Grono snuck one past Royals netminder Dawson Ringuette. The score remained 1-0 until the second period when Royals forward and one third of the Calgary born forward trio, Ben Ankerman scored his second of the season with assists from Kaleb Haskey and Hunter Delf, the line known as the C-train. Tyrone Fraser and Ford Gilbert would put the Mustangs up 3-1, but first year Royals forward Jaxen Davison would pull the Royals to within a goal to make it 3-2 going into the third period.

The Mustangs would go up 4-2 early in the third with a power play goal from Tyrone Fraser, his second of the game with two seconds left on the power play. Jaxen Davison and the Royals would make a late push when he scored on the power play to make it 4-3 Mustangs but it wouldn’t be enough.

Royals netminder Dawson Ringuette stopped 35-39 shots to see his record fall to 1-1-0 on the season. The Royals peppered Mustangs goalie Gabe Osmund with 44 shots in a winning effort.

The Royals will regroup and entertain the Beaumont Chiefs Wednesday September 17th as the Royals celebrate their home opener at Confederation Arena. Puck drop will be at 7:45 PM.
